Justice Joseph A. Boyd
Joseph A. Boyd, Jr., the 59th Justice of the Court, regarded his family as such a central part of his life that he resolved they would somehow appear in his official Court portrait. The problem was that his portrait actually was supposed to show only him.
Nevertheless, he and the artist hit upon the idea of having a family portrait painted immediately behind the Justice, which made Justice Boyd the only "living" thing in the painting but also allowed his family to appear just behind him.
