    Justice Jorge Labarga

    Jorge Labarga was born in Cuba and came to Florida as a young boy where he lived with his family in Pahokee. He served on the bench for thirteen years before his appointment to the Florida Supreme Court by Gov. Charlie Crist on January 2, 2009, and he assumed the office on January 6, 2009.Justice Jorge Labarga

    Justice Labarga received his bachelor's degree in 1976 and his law degree in 1979, both from the University of Florida. He worked from 1979 to 1982 as an assistant public defender in Florida's Fifteenth Judicial Circuit and from 1982 to 1987 as an assistant state attorney in the same circuit.

    He was in private practice from 1987 to 1996 before his appointment as a circuit judge in the Fifteenth Circuit by Gov. Lawton Chiles.

    Justice Labarga is the 84th Justice to take office at the Florida Supreme Court since statehood was granted in 1845.

    NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC: The Code of Judicial Conduct governing behavior by judges forbids the Justices of the Florida Supreme Court to discuss pending cases with the public.  Please do not call the Court expecting to speak with a Justice about any case.  If you have a comment to make, please mail it to the Clerk's Office at 500 S. Duval St., Tallahassee FL 32399.  However, the Court is only allowed to consider arguments made in the courtroom and in documents properly filed by actual parties in the case as authorized by law and the Rules of Court.  The Court cannot ethically read or consider any other opinions or arguments about the case. Communications that do not meet these legal requirements cannot be forwarded to the Justices.
